Cassidy's Appointment to Senate Energy Panel Another Blow to Landrieu's Clout

Obama rubber stamp Mary Landrieu suffered yet another blow to her already stumbling campaign today, after the Associated Press reported that Senate Republicans promised Bill Cassidy a seat on the Senate Energy Committee. For months, Landrieu has campaigned on the amount of “clout” she brings to the state as chair of the Energy Committee. However, now that Republicans control the chamber, Landrieu’s “clout” has been rapidly disappearing, a fact underscored by Senator Mitch McConnell’s promise that Dr. Cassidy will have a seat on that very same committee should he win in the December runoff.

“All that Mary Landrieu’s ‘clout’ has gotten Louisianians is a boatload of empty promises and a lack of accountability,” LAGOP Executive Director Jason Doré said.“She promised this state to make the passing of the Keystone XL pipeline her top priority and failed. When the time came to convince President Obama that Keystone should be a priority, Landrieu even said it wasn’t her job to convince the President to pass it. That is not leadership that reflects Louisiana values.”

During Landrieu’s chairmanship of the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, not a single bill passed through her committee even received a full Senate vote. In addition to walking away from the Keystone XL pipeline and endorsing anti-energy Obama appointees, Landrieu failed to guide offshore drilling revenue reform to passage even though it was another one of her major priorities.

“Bill Cassidy will bring actual ‘clout’ to the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee,” continued Doré. “Louisianians can be assured that Cassidy will continue to be a champion for our state every single day, especially when it comes to passing the Keystone XL pipeline.”
